General Motors is set to auction off a special Chevrolet Camaro airbrushed by Mickey Harris as a tribute to the nation’s armed forces. The design pays homage to all five branches of the country’s military with a unique mural, and the vehicle is headed to the Barrett-Jackson classic car auction in Scottsdale, Arizona next month.

Proceeds from the auction will go toward the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans. The organization helps wounded vets overcome their disabilities by participating in mainstream athletics and has doubled in size since 2010. GM has supported the charity with various donations in the past, including the contribution of 20 hand cycles.

GM will show off the Harris Camaro during this weekend’s Army Navy game, with CBS Sports devoting some time to speak with GM CEO and U.S. Naval Academy graduate Dan Akerson as well as members of the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans. Click past the jump for the full press release as well as an excellent new spot on GM’s involvement with the charity.

It just wouldn’t be SEMA without a whole slew of Chevrolet Camaro coupes and convertibles staring us in the face, and this week’s Vegas show doesn’t disappoint. General Motors’ own booth features four rather interesting specimens, which you can see in the image gallery we’ve compiled here.

First comes the Camaro ZL1 Carbon Concept, which boasts a sinister Ashen Gray look with a smattering of carbon fiber bits and pieces. Power comes from the same 580 horsepower and 556 pound-feet of torque supercharged V8 that’s set to debut in 2012 in the ZL1.

Up next is the Camaro Red Zone Concept. Based on the convertible version of the Chevrolet pony car, this machine wears a coat of Crystal Claret that’s newly available for 2012 along with Chevrolet Accessories silver Ice interior pieces. The exterior features Accessory wheels and a full body kit, all available straight from the dealer. Finally, that stripe package you see will soon be available to Camaro owners.

The silver convertible you see in our gallery is the Camaro Synergy Series Concept, and it’s wearing a coat of Silver Ice plus black Synergy decals with red line inserts. Chevrolet Accessory black-painted wheels join a body kit and body-color grille.

Finally, there’s the Camaro 1LE Concept. As with other 1LE packages, this one has a suspension kit that is intended for road race circuits. It’s Victory Red exterior is set off by a flat black hood and hash mark extensions. Most of the underpinnings will be available on the ZL1 for 2012, including the magnetic ride suspension.

Read all about each of these concepts in the press release after the break.

If you played with Hot Wheels as a kid (or as an adult, as some on the Autoblog team have admitted to doing), then you’ve probably imagined what it would be like to have the thing in full size. Chevrolet has tried to make that a reality, creating a Camaro concept car inspired by the “Custom Camaro” 1/64-scale model that was part of the original Hot Wheels collection released in 1968.

Making its debut at SEMA today, the Camaro Hot Wheels Concept features chrome green paint, ghosted Hot Wheels logos on the fenders, satin black wheels, a Euro-style rear fascia and taillights and black aluminum hood insert with milled heat extractors. Under the hood is the standard LS3 V8.

You can read a full list of the car’s features after the jump, and be sure to check out our live photos in the gallery above.

Chevrolet is coming to this year’s SEMA show with a total of six concept Camaro and Corvette models, and they’re all designed to show off exactly what owners can do with their vehicles with a little time, money and imagination. While there will be a number of concepts wearing special visual upgrades, including the Camaro Convertible Red Zone Concept and the Camaro Synergy Series Concept, we’re most excited about the Camaro 1LE Concept.

Die-hard Bowtie fans will likely recognize the 1LE package code as a road-racing designation, and the new concept doesn’t disappoint. Along with a new splitter and rocker panels outside, the Camaro wears a magnetic ride control suspension, special chassis bracing, a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox, Brembo brakes and a host of bits lifted from the meaner ZL1. Those include a dual-mode exhaust, shifter and flat-bottom steering wheel.

Speaking of the ZL1, fans of that machine will enjoy a new Camaro ZL1 Carbon Concept packed with trimmings made from the lightweight weave. Corvette fans will also get a chance to take a peek at two special concepts, including a Grand Sport designed to pay tribute to 50 years of the Corvette nameplate at Carlisle and a Corvette Z06 Ron Fellows Hall of Fame tribute car. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Remember the Sharpie Lamborghini Gallardo from 2007? A Chevrolet Camaro has been given a similar treatment courtesy of Maryland-based professional pinstriper Chris Dunlop. Stepping away from his cans of paint and fine brushes, Dunlop has created two magnificently detailed Sharpie tapestries where the original pinstripes would have been.

According to LSX TV, Dunlop says this Camaro is the fourth car he’s decorated like this, and others have followed. Ten pens gave their lives to the cause of art, as well as a few layers of clearcoat to make sure the ink remains permanent. If you happen to think you could do this at home to your own ride, have a look at the detail shots in the gallery – a Sharpie isn’t just a marker in Dunlop’s hands.

Back in April, Ron Adamwicz’s electric 1981 Chevrolet Camaro ripped down the quarter-mile track at Palm Beach International Raceway in just 11.253 seconds. In addition to its record-setting quarter-mile run, the electrified Camaro, dubbed “Warp Factor II,” set a world record with a 6.8-second 1/8-mile run at 93.43 miles per hour. And get this: those records were set with just one of the Camaro’s two electric motors operational.

On August 6, with both electric motors functioning correctly, the Team Haiyin EV Racing Chevy Camaro tore down the strip at Lebanon Valley Dragway in 10.08 seconds, hitting a top speed of 127 mph. That time puts the electric Camaro within spitting distance of the Black Current, the converted Volkswagen Beetle that holds the world record for “street bodied” electric vehicles. The time to beat stands at 9.51 seconds. That’s simply amazing considering the 1,001-horsepower Bugatii Veyron roars down the 1/4-mile in the mid-10s. Hit the jump to watch the electric Camaro rip down the tarmac.

Muscle cars have never coped well with having their tops clipped. Losing the roof rarely does a vehicle any favors in the rigidity department, but the high-horsepower, high-torque coupes of the last four decades took fiendish delight in twisting themselves into pretzels after a few enthusiastic throttle plunges. To make matters worse, frumpy, awkward-looking soft tops were never as attractive as the original tin. When it came time to design the fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro, the engineers at General Motors specifically aimed to avoid those pitfalls by drafting the chassis to field both coupe and convertible duties.

Long before the first test mule ever turned a tire, this coupe was designed to go topless, and the result is one of the more stable convertible platforms out there. With a little help from the minds behind the Chevrolet Corvette soft top, the retractable lid even offers the same sleek profile as the Camaro Coupe. That’s not to say all is right in this cruising kingdom, though. Tough top-up visibility, a bulging waistline and an overly extroverted interior all work against the drop head. Even so, this is still a vehicle soaked in summertime. And whatdayaknow? The sun’s out.

General Motors has big plans for the upcoming Chicago Auto Show. At the exposition opening this week, GM will unveil a pair of new vehicles, although details on what form they’ll take remain scarce.

The news comes from reports quoting GM’s North American president Mark Reuss. All he’s revealed at this point is that one of the two cars will be based on the Chevrolet Camaro’s platform. That tells us it will be a front-engine/rear-drive vehicle, but little else. So, commence speculation: Camaro Z28? Chevy Zeta-platform sedan? (Which we think should be called Chevelle, because hey, if Dodge can call its sedan Charger…)

As for the second car slated for the Windy City salon, your guess is as good as ours. So we’ll just have to sit tight and see what the General has got in store for us.
