Coulomb Technologies opened its first public electric vehicle charging station in Manhattan this week as part of the ChargePoint America program. Under a Department of Energy-funded program, Coulomb and other charging station manufacturers are installing thousands of outlets in cities around the United States. The new Manhattan station has been installed in an Edison Properties parking garage – and it will have a valet to perform the charges.
Coulomb has already shipped 700 of its ChargePoint units to customers around the world. The ChargePoint is a networked charger that allows subscribers access through a smart card and, when the car is plugged in, the driver’s account is automatically billed (but Coulomb is not actually selling the energy). The ChargePoint stations are also configured to allow for future smart-grid load balancing through vehicle-to-grid energy transfer.
Coulomb has developed an iPhone application that lets users find unoccupied charging stations in real-time – and we’re assuming there’s a way to stop gas-powered cars from parking at these locations, like maybe that “EV parking only” sign in the picture.
